Ghent

I just can't ghent enough ...

When one thinks of Belgium, the most likely destinations to come to mind include Brugge and Brussels. But what about Ghent? Ever heard of it? Rather left out of the must-visit lists, Ghent is one city that deserves more attention than it gets. My December adventures to Brugge led me to the incredible city of Ghent, and I quite simply wish I had more time to explore it.

Getting There

Plane

International flights get you to Brussels, the country’s capital. From there just jump on a train to Ghent with a change at Brussels Central Station. Check live schedules here.

Train

Belgium is well connected with frequent international (through Brussels) and national rail services. Jump on the Eurostar from London St Pancras and after a short change in Brussels find yourself in Ghent.

Tip: Eurostar tickets include travel to any Belgian train station, so no need to purchase an additional train ticket for travel between Brussels and Ghent.

Bus

The slowest but most affordable transport option tends to be with coach transport. Catch a bus from most European cities and enjoy the journey all the way to Ghent. Check out the bus schedule here.

Ghent is an eclectic city with so much to offer. Whether you’re after shopping, history or culinary experiences you will surely find it here.

Belfry of Ghent

Want unrivalled views over the city? Climb or take the lift if you’re feeling a little lazy (no judgement) up the tallest Belfry in Belgium and you will not be disappointed.

Tip: Entry costs €8 for adults but if you’re under 26 you can gain entry for just €2.20, just show your ID.

Holy Food Market

Ever fancied treating your tastebuds to delicious street food within a church? Than come on down to the Holy Food Market. Located within a 16th century chapel you’ll find a multitude of street food vendors for a culinary experience like no other.

Tip: Ensure to check the opening hours, as vendors close between lunch and dinner.

Gravensteen

Who doesn’t love exploring a castle? Wander through the Castle of the Counts, a 12th century fortress or just admire it from its exterior.

Wander the streets

I firmly believe that the best way to explore a city is by wandering its streets and getting lost within them. Ghent is definitely a place to do just that, wander along the canals before exploring the many winding streets. You never know what treasures you might find.

Bar Win

An absolutely wonderful find! Whether you’re after some breakfast, just a coffee or a wine or two, Bar Win is the place. Find this gem right near Gravensteen, terrific food, delicious wine, great vibes and fantastic service. I cannot recommend this place enough!

Try Cuberdon

The traditional Ghent candy Cuberdon, also called the noses of Ghent is a must try on a visit to the city. Find these delicious treats on Groentenmarkt.

So, whether you choose to visit for a day like I did or stay for a few, you will not be disappointed with this incredible city. Start planning your Belgian adventure and explore Ghent before everyone realises just how much they’re missing out on.
